| Huntsville,
AL weather has been recorded since 1894, although back in those
days the recordings were mainly rainfall and temperature. The
Huntsville Weather Bureau did not exist formally until 1958,
which was when the reporting of averages for the area and extremes
began to be documented. Huntsville,
AL weather consists of mild climates when compared to
other areas. Located in Northern Alabama not far from Tennessee,
the average low temperatures recently recorded for January
(according to a 30 year average) was 30.7 degrees. This is
a moderate temperature for a city located so close to the
mountains where often winter temperatures are in single digits
and below.
Snowfall
The
winter season of 1987-88 was the snowiest season recorded
with 10.6 inches and 1984-85 before that with 8.2 inches.
Previous to that, 1967-68 with 10.5 inches was the snowiest
winters on record. Over the last 20 years, as you can see,
Huntsville, AL weather has not had any large amounts of snowfall
particularly compared to cities in the Northern States.
Rainfall
The
most rainfall recorded up to this point in Huntsville, AL
weather history was in 1990 and was recorded as being 72.26
inches. This is just about the perfect amount of rain to keep
things lush and green. The wettest month recorded was in 1990
when the area had 18.68 inches of rainfall in December.
Going to the other
extreme in Huntsville AL weather the driest month on record
was October 2000, when only 0.01 inches of rain was reported.
Weather stations reported that 2007 was the driest year with
only 28.65 inches of rain.
Temperate
seasonal climate is one of the reasons this area is so well
known as the outdoor sports attraction it is, which includes
world class golf at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail along
with several other area golf courses. The average high temperature
for Huntsville, AL weather is 89.4 degrees which typically
occurs in July. The lack of extremes in hot and cold weather
is what makes this area so popular for many outdoor venues.
The rainfall for
the Huntsville, AL area is around 4.8 inches per month. The
observations of precipitation and temperature for this town
were not started until 1937. At that time, it was a very small
town and these observations were taken on the electric company's
property. In 1945 this was moved to the Huntsville Municipal
Airport. In 1958 and 1967 the station was moved again with
the 1967 move becoming a permanent move as this is where the
station is today, at the Huntsville International Airport.
This was an important
move due to the elevation and features of the area being practically
the same as the area from which it was moved. The same land
features, including natural ones for example, where rivers,
mountains and railroads as well as highways.
There were several moves of the weather recording locations
from 1894 to the present without a change in the lay of the
land. The following are the continuous recording locations
of the weather which is considered official due to this fact.
* Madison - February
1, 1894 to December 31, 1936 *
Huntsville - January 1, 1937 to July 14, 1954
* Madison - July
15, 1954 to August 31, 1958 *
Huntsville - September 1, 1958 to the present.
Huntsville, AL weather
is just about as perfect as you can ask for if you want moderate
temperatures - not too cold, not too hot – ideal weather
for that golf game, fishing, hunting, camping and most any
other outdoor activity you have been considering.
